Ocean tides can drag the atmosphere and cause tidal winds over broad continental shelves

چکیده

Abstract Oceanic tides lead to some of the largest currents world ocean and have important implications for oceanic circulation. In last decade, feedback effect surface on overlying winds has been shown strongly regulate Here we present evidence, using coupled high-resolution ocean-atmosphere simulations in situ measurements, that can drag atmosphere above. The current-induced tidal expand across atmospheric boundary layer, while dissipating energy. They are likely many shelf regions ocean, with an amplitude about one-third underlying currents, i.e., up 1.5 ms −1 . Consideration areas ranging from climate modeling wind farming.

The effect of continental shelves on tides

Coastal tides are influenced by several factors and one of the most important of these is the character of the adjacent continental shelf. A continental margin theory is derived and used to discuss several different aspects of the effect " 'smooth" continental shelves have on tides. The main results are as follows. (a) The theory suggests, in accordance with observations, that semi-diurnal tide...

Estimation of Nearshore Tidal Currents on Nonsmooth Continental Shelves

The theory of Battisti and Clarke (1982) to calculate analytically barotropic tidal currents across 'smooth' continental margin topography is shown to be valid near shore on 'nonsmooth' continental shelves. The theory includes longshore gradients and friction and produces formulae easily evaluated with coastal sea level data. The tidal currents across three such shelves (West Florida, south of ...

Effects of Winds, Tides, and Storm Surges on Ocean Surface Waves in the Japan/east Sea

Wind driven oceanic surface waves have a major impact on marine activity, especially near the coastal regions. Strong winds associated with winter storms induce storm surges along the west coast of Japan. Combined high wind conditions, tides, and storm surges can have a tremendous impact on the surface wave fields. Accurate wave forecast becomes an important issue at various operational forecas...

Modeling Internal Tides and Mixing Over Ocean Ridges

Observations from the Hawaiian Ocean Mixing Experiment (HOME) survey component suggest an increase in diapycnal mixing events during spring tides in a region above a steep slope. To study possible mixing mechanisms, we utilize numerical simulations of the benthic boundary layer, using a domain on the order of 200 m, with environmental parameters consistent with the conditions during HOME. In mo...
